Gorden Wagener, the current chief designer of Mercedes-Benz, gave a short but informative interview to ABC News, in which he talked about the prospects of autopilot, the problem of large screens in car interiors, and when designers will be replaced by artificial intelligence.
A 56-year-old native of Essen (Germany) named Gorden Wagener joined Mercedes-Benz in 1997, and he rose to his current position as head of all design for the company in 2008, meaning that the appearance of all modern Mercedes is, if not his personal creativity, then his direct responsibility. The barely distinguishable C-Class and E-Class are the fault/achievement (underline as appropriate) of Gorden Wagener, as well as the fish-shaped EQ electric cars and unified interiors with touch screens.
In 2021, the flagship electric liftback Mercedes-Benz EQS debuted a giant 141-centimeter Hyperscreen with three screens, which was met with mixed reactions from customers and the press, many were, to put it mildly, not thrilled with it, and Gorden Wagener admitted this in an interview with ABC News. Firstly, large screens in the cabin have long been a common place, and it is difficult to surprise anyone with them, and secondly, the Hyperscreen has some problems with the quality of content and graphics – the company is going to fix this in the near future.
